A Q&A with a Young Writers Superstar!

Hi Benjamin, Thank you for taking the time to answer our questions!

1. How or where did you first hear about Young Writers?
When I first entered my first poetry competition, it was called Through Their Eyes competition in Dagenham Park School. My teacher, Miss Harris Batt, was hosting the competition when I was in Y9!

2. What made you want to take part?
I wanted to take part in the Young Writers competition because it’s a great way to share my experiences, connect with other writers, and showcase my creativity. It’s an exciting opportunity to see my work published and inspire others with my writing.
Also, I enjoy exploring my imagination and processing my feelings. It gives me the opportunity to explore different worlds and ideas without being judged.

3. Do you prefer writing stories or poems?
I love both writing stories and poems! Each form allows me to express my thoughts and feelings in different ways.

4. What topics do you like to write about and why?
I enjoy writing about a variety of topics such as lockdown, education, idols, and the future. These themes resonate with me because they allow me to explore emotions and share meaningful experiences.

5. Are there any authors or poets who inspire you?
I like David Walliams because he liked reading and writing stories in English and learning all about the dark and dangerous characters who shaped the world in history. I even got to do a presentation about him! It was for researching a topic at Sixth-form for my BTEC Vocational Studies Level 1 Course!

6. Your work has so far been published in an incredible 18 books with Young Writers! What has been your favourite competition?
I would say Poetry Idols because idols are important because they can inspire us, motivate us, and show us what's possible. They can be role models who encourage us to pursue our dreams and be our best selves.
When I wrote my poem to Miss Joyce and Miss Ligertwood, they read my poem. They were so touched and overjoyed! I couldn’t thank them enough for supporting me since Y7 at Dagenham Park for teaching me literacy, tutoring me and giving me positive advice to become a talented, gifted author! They are role models who I look up to!

7. How does it feel to have your work published in a book?
Having my work published in a book can feel incredibly rewarding and exciting! It’s like seeing my thoughts and creativity come to life on the page for others to read and enjoy. It’s a special feeling of accomplishment and validation for all the hard work you put into your writing.

8. What would you say to any other aspiring writers who are thinking about entering a Young Writers competition?
I would say to any other aspiring writer thinking about entering a Young Writers competition to go for it! It’s a fantastic opportunity to showcase your talent, share your stories, and connect with other young writers. Don’t be afraid to express yourself through your writing and let your creativity shine. Who knows, your work could inspire others and make a real impact!

My words have the power to inspire and uplift others. My stories and poems are like windows to my imagination, allowing others to see the world through my eyes. I will keep sharing my unique voice with the world; I never know whose day I might brighten or whose heart I might touch with my words. I will keep writing, keep dreaming, and keep spreading my creativity far and wide!

This experience has given me real confidence in my writing. I had a huge sense of accomplishment in seeing my work in print and hasn’t stopped writing poems since! I now aspire to be an author when I grow up or a nursery teacher. Thank you so much for the opportunity! I'm so grateful and thankful and honoured!
