The perfect introduction to poetry with fun, easy-to-learn acrostics!

Have a roar-some time with your pupils creating fun and fierce poems!

Monster Acrostics will bring imagination, creativity and fun bursting to life in your classroom as your pupils create a monster and then discover the delights of poetry as they write about their creepy or cute creations!

Easy to teach and even easier to learn, acrostics are the perfect introduction to poetry. Watch the fun, engaging video (or alternatively use the PowerPoint) which teaches your pupils how to write their very own acrostic poem. 

The opportunity to see their work published in a real book will inspire your pupils and get them excited to write, and there are fantastic prizes up for grabs too! Every entrant will receive a bookmark and sticker, anyone chosen for publication gets a certificate of merit and our favourite 5 poems will win a creative goody bag! The school with the best set of entries will also win a huge poetry book bundle for their library.

Competition Rules

To make sure your entries are valid, please follow the rules listed below:

Closing Date: Friday 24th May 2024
  • Only one entry per pupil, there is no limit to the number of entries per school. Please submit your entries altogether where possible!
  • Ask your pupils to write their poem (or an adult can scribe/type it), ensuring their name, age and school name are included.
  • Poems can be on the entry form or an A4 sheet of paper or typed (on a computer or in the Online Writing Portal).
  • Pupils' poems must be their own work!

(Please note on the entry if there is anything we need to take into consideration when reading the work.)

  • Poems need to be in the acrostic style.
  • Free to enter.
  • UK entrants only.
  • Copyright remains with the author.

For Schools

The school that submits the best overall set of entries will win Young Writers' Award of Excellence and a fantastic poetry book bundle.

PLUS every participating school receives a free copy of the book their pupils feature in! (Remember, you receive 1 free copy for every 30 entries you submit! E.g. 1-30 entries you receive 1 copy, 31-60 entries you receive 2 copies, etc).  

The school prize is a magnificent poetry book bundle which includes a copy of each book in the photo.
